Cover Story: Great Uncle Roland's Zephyrs: Kit Foster Spins a Yarn About a Wealthy Relative who Switched to L-Z's

On the Cover: The Lincoln-Zephyrs we see today are either carefully tended, seldom driven examples that have been preserved or restored for their beauty and collectibility, or they are shabby piles of junk awaiting either a restorer's loving touch or a wrecker's cutting torch. So it has been for so many years that we may have difficulty imagining Zephyrs as new cars, bought for their utility-- their transportation value --by their first owners, but of course, that's what they were built for. We seldom see photographs of them taken when they were first put on the roadto remind us of those days in the 1930's and '40's, so it is a real treat to see the car pictured on our cover, a brand-new 1937 Lincoln-Zephyr Coupe Sedan. It is so new it still wears a 1936 California license plate, and it is outfitted with a spotlight, which was a factory-authorized accessory, and a pair of draft deflectors, which were not.
Roland Mayer, the original owner of this car, was the great-uncle of automotive writer and historian Kit Foster, of Gale's Ferry, Connecticut, who brings to life this bit of family history for our enjoyment, and tells how wealthy Great-Uncle Roland, a man who had owned and driven Duesenbergs and Cadillac V-16's, finally switched to Lincoln-Zephyrs.
