Cover Story: A Meet Report on LZOC West's Diamonds in the Desert; Rio Verde, Arizona - May 17-19, 2001

On the Cover:The handsome Burgundy Red 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr Coupe driven to the Diamonds in the Desert meet, GOF West XI, by Lee and Shirley Hopkins of Fortuna, California. Their trip of some 1070 miles earned them the Bob Francy Award for the longest distance driven to the meet in an H-Series V-12 car, and, of course, it was another 1070 miles to get home again. Here is the car on the road down to the Rio Verde Ranch, with the saguaro in full bloom. The saguaro is the largest cactus in the country, with a height of as much as fifty feet, and its blossom is the Arizona state flower. A clump of waxy white flowers each about the size of a teacup appears at the tip of each arm of a saguaro in May of each year, so GOF West XI was scheduled perfectly to see them at their best.
