Zephyrs
at the Eel River
GOF XVIII LZOC-West
Fortuna, California
June 5-8 2008
Our
GOF West dates were changed this year due to scheduling conflicts with
other area events. This
year it will be June 5-8. We look forward to having good weather this
month.
Our
host hotel will be the Best
Western Country Inn on Riverwalk Drive in Fortuna.
We are going
to start the events with a Victorian home tour in the Ferndale
area. We will
be starting with the Ferndale
Museum, continuing on to Gold Rush pioneers Joseph and Zipporah Russ's
home - Fern Cottage was built
as their family home in 1866. Family
members lived in it continuously for over a century. Today,
it is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the few
homes in California containing the original family furniture and furnishings.
We will then go
on to Linden House. This
is a restored Victorian home with a million dollar, three story garage
that was added on about 10 years ago in a style to match the home. We
will be having a catered picnic lunch at Linden Hall -- fantastic sandwiches,
potato salad, fruit, cookies and a drink. Vegetarian
is available if you call or email me in advance. Make
sure you let me know what kind of sandwich you want.
We will
then have another tour for those interested in seeing the completely modernized,
computerized saw mill at Pacific Lumber Company. There
have been a lot of changes to the mill since the Scotia Meet. Our
very popular auction and raffle will be held Friday night.
Our Concours
will be across the street from the Hotel at the beautiful River Lodge
Conference Center on Saturday. Our
awards banquet will be held Saturday night with a choice of Beef Tri Tip,
Chicken Cordon Bleu or Pasta Primavera. I
have had this catering company's food on a number of occasions and it
is VERY good. Don't
let the low price fool you!
Fortuna
is also having a town wide yard sale on Saturday. Not
that you ever get tired of looking at these beautiful cars but just in
case... Yard salers
and bargain hunters haven't lived until they have been to one of these
town-wide sales.
You may
want to stay over to attend the Wine and Art Show at Fortuna's Rohner
Park. A perfect
start to summer in the heart of Fortuna. Hundreds
of wines to taste, from local vintners and from around the world. A
fine arts area and crafts market to browse and shop. Next
to the festival the Veterans of Foreign Wars cooks deep-pit barbecue.
Sponsored by the
Rotary Club of Fortuna. Free
Admission, $10 glass for tasting.
